RMIT moves to meet high demand for blockchain skills

Introducing two new Australian university first courses.

After the successful launch of Australia’s first blockchain university short course, Blockchain Strategy, RMIT Online today announced the launch of two additional blockchain courses that will provide students with a comprehensive overview of the technology, including the understanding of how to design blockchain infrastructure, to further their skills and learn how to think strategically about implementing a blockchain solution into the core of their businesses.

Accenture, an industry leader in blockchain, identified a skills gap in qualified blockchain professionals, prompting the partnership with RMIT Online to add Designing Blockchain Solutions (commences 8 October) and Developing Blockchain Applications (commences 21 January) to its robust program offerings. The courses are part of RMIT Online’s professional portfolio comprising of industry-endorsed short courses that aim to bridge important skills gaps among executives, professionals and those looking to future-proof their careers in a more accessible manner.

Designing Blockchain Solutions will support students ‒ from managers, entrepreneurs and consultants to tech enthusiasts and software developers ‒ to develop an understanding of distributed ledger technologies infrastructure on a more technical level without needing to have programming skills. Various blockchain platforms, including Ethereum and those within the Hyperledger project (Sawtooth, Fabric and Composer), will be explored.

The announcement of the two courses follows the unveiling of a recent initiative in partnership with leading digital credentialing platform, Credly, that gives students blockchain-enabled digital credentials.

Global investment in blockchain is expected to surpass $2 billion, showcasing how quickly the technology has moved from its research and development phase to real world, market applications. RMIT’s industry-relevant partnerships represent its continued commitment to remaining at the forefront of helping students, professionals, and employers realise the potential of blockchain to fill gaps in industry.

RMIT Online CEO Helen Souness said, “Our first short course on blockchain, Developing Blockchain Strategy, sold out in 48 hours to students across the globe.”

“We’re excited to be pioneering these courses with our expert partners at Accenture and Stone & Chalk in upskilling and inspiring professionals to explore real-life applications of blockchain technology within their businesses.”

John Harris, Managing Director, Accenture, said, "Following on from the success of RMIT Online's first blockchain course, we're pleased to partner with the team again on these two new learning offerings."

"From financial services and oil and gas, to mining and government, the potential is huge and we are already seeing the real world applications for blockchain across many industries. However to move the technology forward and get to the next stage, we need the talent."

The courses are fully credentialed by RMIT University. Interested students should have a basic understanding of how distributed ledger technology works.
